If you have decided that you would like a hardwood floor installed in your home, you will have to make sure that your home is suitable for this type of flooring first. It is not always possible to have the real thing placed in your home as some areas are not right for hardwood flooring. For example, areas with high levels of moisture would not be suitable as hardwood floors (such as oak flooring) should not be allowed to get wet as they can warp and lift.
Before laying your hardwood floor, you will have to ensure that you lay a sub-floor first. This allows for installation of a hardwood floor over hard concrete, stone or slabs. Installing a sub-floor will also provide you with an insulation layer to protect against any moisture.
There is a lot of work involved in laying hardwood floors and for this reason professional fitters can charge a high price. If you want to install your wooden floors yourself, then you should be prepared for a lot of graft. You must make sure that you’re the floor underneath is level or else your wooden floor will not itself be level and therefore will not sit properly.
A floating floor is a great alternative to having your wooden floor nailed down as it can be clicked into place and laid upon your existing floor like a jigsaw. This can greatly ease the work involved.
As solid wood will expand and contract depending on the temperature of the area that it is in, it is advisable to allow it to acclimatise in the room where it is to be laid for a few days before you begin your project. This will allow the wood to adjust to the temperature of the room and will mean that you won’t have any problems once the floor has been laid.
You should make sure that the area upon which you will be laying your hardwood floors is completely free from dust or dirt. To make doubly sure that it is clean it would be a good idea to give it a vacuum or a sweep more than once before you begin.
Before starting the project of installing your hardwood floors you will need to ensure that you have a suitable selection of power tools for the job. If you do not have these already you should try to rent some as it will make the job a whole lot easier. If you do not take on DIY jobs regularly, it is inadvisable to buy these power tools as you may never need to use them again! It will save you money in the long run! Once you are prepared, you will find it a lot easier to complete your project.
